What I actually do

Product architecture, scope, and the calls that decide whether a thing gets built at all. I do fractional CIO work — dropped into a company to find out what's actually wrong, fix it, and hand it to permanent leadership. In manufacturing that has meant wearing four or five hats at once: warranty, security, IT, and marketing, plus tech-stack counsel to every other department. That's normal for the industry, not an outlier.

The hardware thing

My degree is in hardware, which turned out to be a long way from where the work went — and also the reason some of it exists. I program microcontrollers. I built the headphone and DJ channel-swapping tech behind the silent disco platform two decades ago, and it's still in service. Most people selling AI pipelines can't do that, and most people who can don't do the other half.

Teaching, and a permit fight

I taught nights as an adjunct at Okefenokee Tech — now Coastal Pines — and built the capstone projects for an IT degree program that couldn't launch without them. Separately, I got tattooing permitted in southeast Georgia by taking it to the chamber and winning, then opened a studio and helped a guy go from prison guard to the best artist in the area.

Security work

Authorized assessments only, white and grey hat. No black hat work, ever. I've never gotten in on a purely technical exploit — I've gotten in by walking through the front door twice. That tells you where most real risk lives.

The gap

I stepped back for a couple of years to raise my son. My wife took the first half, I took the second. EAS stayed up and clients stayed served, but I was mainly a dad. He's seven and in school now, so I'm back on this full time.
