Week 1 is a rumor. Week 2 is the first honest look. The 209 board came back with one result that surprised nobody, one that stung, and a Week 3 matchup that is going to tell us most of what we need to know about Oakdale this season.

Lincoln 27, Oakdale 21 — on the road, non-league.
East Union 49, Modesto 0.
Oakdale at Escalon, Friday September 11, 7:30 p.m.
Oakdale, 1-1, and not in trouble.
A six-point road loss to Lincoln is not a crisis and should not be reported as one. The Mustangs put 21 on the board in both of their first two games, which says the offense has a floor. They also sit near the top of Sac-Joaquin Section Division III in the early ranking conversation, which means the section is not reading Week 2 as a collapse either.
What a 1-1 start does do is remove the cushion. Non-league games are the ones you use to find out what you have. Oakdale has now found out that it can score against good defenses and that it can also lose a close one away from home.
East Union made a statement.
Forty-nine to nothing is not a score, it is a message. Modesto did not find anything that worked, and East Union did not take its foot off. Shutouts at this level usually mean one of two things: a real defense, or a mismatched week. The rest of the schedule will sort out which.
Escalon is the measuring stick.
Oakdale travels to Escalon on Friday, September 11 at 7:30. If you know the 209 you know this needs no build-up. Two programs with real history, a short drive between them, and a crowd that shows up whether the records say to or not. Oakdale needs it to steady a 1-1 start. Escalon does not need a reason.
