Albuquerque Councilor Sets Aside $200,000 for Homestead Circle Safety Upgrades

City Councilor Stephanie Telles announced a $200,000 allocation from District 1 set-aside funds to rework the Homestead Circle area.

The money will go toward traffic-calming improvements, including speed cushions and widened bike lanes, near Marie Hughes Elementary.

The city ties the project to The Kayla Project: Safer Together, created in memory of Kayla Regan Vanlandingham, a 19-year-old UNM art student killed while cycling on July 22, 2025. The initiative also promotes the Walking School Bus program, a supervised way for students to get to school.

“No loss of life on our roads is acceptable, and with the right design, we can prevent these tragedies,” Telles said.
